And it has introduced an electric model if you want to save on fuel and help the environment. But if you prefer a vehicle with more versatility, you may wonder if Mazda has a hybrid model. Bountiful Mazda has checked it out for you, so read below to learn more.

Does Mazda Make a Hybrid?

Although a hybrid model isn’t available for the American market for 2022, the release of the Mazda CX-60 will soon change that. This plug-in hybrid SUV will be available in Europe in 2023, but Mazda may launch it as the CX-70 in the United States. Currently, the only non-gasoline-powered Mazda model available to American car buyers is the MX-30, an all-electric SUV. Sales for this SUV began in California in 2022, but Mazda will roll it out in other states in the coming years.

The 2023 Mazda CX-60

The CX-60 will be the first-ever plug-in hybrid vehicle from Mazda. Sitting on the automaker’s new SKYACTIV scalable architecture, this model is the first in a series of Mazda SUVs & crossovers with longitudinal engines. Mazda intends these SUVs to reposition the brand closer to premium rivals. According to Mazda, the CX-60 will be wider and designed with American tastes in mind. In terms of exterior styling, the CX-60 shares many similarities with other Mazda SUVs, including the gaping grille, squinting headlamps, and downward-sloping roof.

Initially, the new Mazda CX-60 will offer only one powertrain option: a 188-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that teams with a 173-horsepower electric motor. This setup, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, produces 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to propel the SUV from zero to 60 mph in an impressive 5.3 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 124 mph.

The electric motor gets its power from a 17.8 kWh battery pack and delivers a driving range of 39 miles. Using 240-volt Level 2 equipment takes about two hours and 20 minutes to recharge the battery fully. Alternatively, you can use the engine to juice up the battery, but it will lead to higher fuel consumption.

In the future, a gas-powered 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and a 3.3-liter diesel engine will join the lineup. Both units will have a 48-volt mild hybrid system and send power to the rear wheels.

When it comes to handling, the CX-60 combines athleticism and comfort in the finest Mazda tradition, thanks to its well-tuned chassis. It does a great job of smoothing out bumps and road imperfections and demonstrates excellent body control around sharp corners. Despite being a relatively large vehicle, this SUV is surprisingly easy to maneuver in close quarters, making it an ideal choice for city dwellers.

On the inside, the Mazda CX-60 draws inspiration from contemporary Japanese design, resulting in a clean-looking, modern cabin. Every model looks and feels upscale, but the top trim kicks things up a notch with wood door trim and shiny metal accents. This new Mazda model also offers plenty of infotainment features to keep you connected, informed, and entertained behind the wheel, including a 12.3-inch touch-screen display, a digital instrument cluster, and smartphone connectivity.

The 2023 Mazda CX-60 will be available in three trim levels: the base Exclusive-Line, the Homura, and the range-topping Takumi. Starting prices range from $42,450 for the entry-level model to $46,400 for the highest trim.

The 2023 Mazda MX-30

If you’re planning to switch to an electric vehicle, the 2023 Mazda MX-30 is one of the best options on the market. It’s a well-rounded SUV that excels in almost every department, from driving dynamics to feature content. We expect it to receive significant performance improvements to make it more powerful and versatile than its predecessor.

The previous version of the Mazda MX-30 has an 80.9 kW electric motor and a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. This system generates 143 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque and provides an estimated driving range of 100 miles. The latest model will likely give you a few additional options under the hood, including a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that combines a rotary gasoline engine with an electric motor. With this powertrain, the Mazda SUV may deliver as much as twice its current range.

Aside from powertrain upgrades, the new MX-30 will remain largely the same as the 2022 model. It continues to offer the impressive handling prowess you expect from Mazda vehicles, ensuring an engaging driving experience. One of its most notable features is the electric G-Vectoring Control Plus system, which modulates torque to give you a more natural and consistent handling feel.

The inviting cabin of the MX-30 aptly reflects its eco-friendly nature. It uses plenty of sustainable materials, including 20% recycled threads in the seats, recycled bottles on the door panels, and cork on the door grips and center console. The SUV also provides a wonderful in-vehicle experience with its intuitive and feature-loaded Mazda Connect infotainment system, which includes an 8.8-inch touch-screen display, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and voice command.

Helping you stay safe behind the wheel is Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of driver assistance technologies. Features include forward and reverse automated emergency braking, lane-keep assist, road-keep assist, lane departure alert, rear cross-traffic monitoring, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and driver-attention monitoring.
