Some of the most popular vehicles on the roads are SUVs because of their practicality, comfort, and space. Mazda’s lineup of SUVs has all the features you want and need in a vehicle and offers superior performance and fun driving dynamics. The Mazda CX-50 is a reliable, compact SUV, and the new CX-70 is arriving soon. Take a look at how these two vehicles compare.

The Power

The base powertrain for the 2024 Mazda CX-50 is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine that delivers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo models have a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 227 horsepower and gets 310 lb-ft of torque. Both engines work with a six-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive

The new CX-70 gets its power from a 3.3-liter turbo six-cylinder engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. This engine has two variants, one that delivers 280 horsepower and the other that churns out 340 horsepower for the S trims. A plug-in hybrid version of the CX-70 uses a 2.5-liter gas engine combined with an electric motor to generate 323 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid model allows drivers to travel up to 26 miles on pure electric power before the gas engine kicks in.

All the CX-70’s engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission and come with all-wheel drive. For a more engaging driving experience, all three engines also have paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

The Trim Levels

If you’re looking at the Mazda CX-50, there are several trim levels to choose from. The Select starts with 17-inch black alloy wheels, LED headlights, and roof rails. The Preferred adds a power liftgate and heated exterior side mirrors, and then the Premium comes with a panoramic sunroof. A step up to the Premium Plus adds 20-inch alloy wheels and power-folding side exterior mirrors.

The Turbo trims start with 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and self-leveling adaptive headlights. The Turbo Meridian Edition is a more adventure-ready model with all-terrain tires. The Turbo Premium and Premium Plus have the same features as the regular Premium and Premium Plus Models.

The new CX-70 doesn’t have as many trim levels as the CX-50, but it offers many of the same features. The Turbo Preferred starts the lineup with a blacked-out exterior. It has 19-inch gray metal alloy wheels, black-trimmed side mirrors, roof rails, and a rear spoiler. It comes with auto-leveling LED headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights.

A step up to the Premium gets you 21-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free liftgate, and a power panoramic sunroof. This trim also adds more black exterior trim. The Turbo Premium Plus builds on the Premium with power-folding, auto-dimming side mirrors, and a power panoramic sunroof.

The Technology

Technology features in the CX-50 start with a 10.25-inch touch screen for the infotainment system. It comes loaded with a wireless version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium trim upgrades the standard eight-speaker stereo to a 12-speaker system and adds a wireless charging pad.

The new CX-70 has upgraded tech features that are standard. It starts with a 12.3-inch Mazda Connect center infotainment touch screen that works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 7-inch LCD instrument panel sits in front of the driver, a wireless charging pad comes standard, and two USB-A ports are in the back seat.

The Premium adds a fully digital 12.3-inch driver information display and a head-up display that projects information on the windshield right in the driver’s line of sight. The Premium models will also come with Mazda’s new online navigation system, which has over-the-air updates for the built-in navigation system.

The Cabin Features

The CX-50 and the CX-70 have two rows of seats and room for five passengers. The CX-70 is much larger, with a massive rear cargo area that offers 39.6 cu ft of cargo space behind the rear seats and a large storage area under the floor. The CX-50 has 31.4 cu ft of storage behind the rear seats, which can open up to 56.3 cu ft with the back seats folded down.

Inside the CX-50 Select, you’ll find synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The Preferred adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. If you bump up to the Premium Plus, you’ll get memory settings for the driver’s seat, full leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats. The Turbo models start with leather upholstery, and both front seats have power adjustments. The Turbo Premium Plus has heated rear seats.

Since the CX-70 starts with the Turbo Preferred trim, it comes standard with black leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, and power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support. The Turbo Premium Plus adds heated rear seats, upgrades to premium Nappa leather upholstery, and has a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats.

Safety Features

Both the Mazda CX-50 and the Mazda CX-70 come equipped with an impressive suite of advanced driver aids. The i-Activesense bundle of safety systems comes standard with both models, which includes forward collision warning, automatic braking, a blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus adds a 360-degree surround-view monitor for a top-down view around the SUV. It comes with front and rear parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, and a blind-spot intervention system that will automatically steer the CX-50 back into its lane if the driver tries to change lanes when a vehicle is in your blind spot.

The CX-70 has a new safety feature called Unresponsive Driver Support. It is an emergency deceleration system that can bring the car to a stop when it senses an unresponsive driver.
