Mazda is adding a new SUV to its lineup. The highly anticipated 2025 CX-70 will join the CX-90 in the midsize SUV segment. The CX-90 arrived in spring 2023 to replace the three-row, eight-seater CX-9 SUV. The CX-70 is almost identical to the CX-90 but with two rows of seats and room for five passengers. Our team at Bountiful Mazda in Utah created this guide showcasing the similarities and differences between the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and 2024 Mazda CX-90 and the trims and features you can expect with these two SUVs.

Engines

The standard powertrain for the Mazda CX-70 is a 3.3-liter turbocharged I-6 with an efficient 48-volt hybrid system delivering 280 horsepower in the lower-level models or 340 horsepower in the S trims. Mazda will also offer the CX-70 as a plug-in hybrid using a 2.5-liter gas engine and an electric motor to generate a combined 323 horsepower. All three powertrains come standard with all-wheel drive. The engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which features paddle shifters for optimized control and an engaging driving experience and includes a manual-shift mode.

The CX-90’s powertrain options mirror the CX-70’s. With the base engine under the hood, the CX-90 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, so you should expect the same performance from the 2025 CX-70 since it’s structurally identical.

Trim Levels

The CX-70 trim lineup starts with the Preferred. It has a black-out theme with 19-inch gray metal alloy wheels, black chrome fender badging, black side mirrors, roof rails, and a rear spoiler. Standard features on this model include LED headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights. You’ll also get heated door mirrors and a power sunroof.

Stylish 21-inch wheels and a hands-free liftgate distinguish the Premium, while the Premium Plus has a power panoramic sunroof. The higher-level S Premium and S Premium Plus bring unique elements to the lineup. Each model features Mazda intelligent Drive Select, and the Towing Mode available on select trims boosts the CX-70’s towing capabilities.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has a broader range of trims than the 2025 CX-70. The entry-level Select has 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, roof rails, and a power liftgate. The Preferred adds a sunroof, while the Preferred Plus offers a tow package for increased towing capacity. Features of the CX-90 Premium include 21-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim elements, a hands-free liftgate, and a panoramic sunroof. Stepping up to the Premium Plus gets you power-folding and auto-dimming side exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper deicer.

Interior Features

The most significant difference between the 2025 CX-70 and the 2024 CX-90 is the number of seats. The SUVs are the same size, but the CX-90 adds a third row to increase the seating capacity from five to eight. With all three rows in place, the CX-90 has 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space. You can expand this to 40 cubic feet by folding the third-row seating or 75.2 cubic feet by lowering both back rows.

Inside the CX-90 Select, you’ll find tri-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather seating, and a keyless ignition system. Upgrades to the Preferred trim include genuine leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat. The Premium Plus swaps out the second-row bench seat for captain’s chairs, reducing seating to seven. It has heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats.

The 2025 CX-70 starts with the Preferred trim, which comes standard with black leather upholstery and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Premium adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings, and the Premium Plus upgrades to nappa leather seating. Like the CX-90, it has a power-adjustable passenger seat and heated rear seats.

Technology

The 2024 CX-90 and the 2025 CX-70 have similar technology features. Both have an infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Premium Plus trim has a 12.3-inch display and adds a digital instrument panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless charging pad enhance connectivity and convenience in the Preferred Plus and higher trims. Amazon Alexa integration is available to make life on the road easier.

The Premium comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel that sits in front of the driver and Mazda’s head-up Active Driving Display. An eight-speaker stereo system is standard in the CX-70 and the CX-90, but you can upgrade to a 12-speaker Bose system by opting for the Premium model.

Safety Systems

All CX-70 trim levels offer a comprehensive array of safety features. The i-ACTIVSENSE bundle includes blind-spot monitoring, radar cruise control, driver attention alert, smart brake support, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera. The 2025 CX-70 features Mazda’s latest safety technology — Cruising & Traffic Support with Unresponsive Driver Support, which detects when a driver becomes incapacitated and slows or stops the vehicle if the driver doesn’t respond after a series of alerts. Additional technologies on the Premium Plus include a 360-degree surround-view camera system, front cross-traffic alert, and automatic rear braking.

Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of advanced driver aids is also standard on the CX-90. This SUV has a safe exit assist system that prevents the rear doors from opening if traffic is approaching from behind and a rear seat reminder to make sure the driver checks the rear seat for children or pets before walking away. The Premium trims add active blind-spot assistance and front and rear parking sensors. Like the CX-70, the Premium Plus has a surround-view camera and automatic reverse braking.
