With hybrid and electric vehicles becoming more popular and Mazda now offering several options, we thought it would be a good time to mention some electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid vehicle incentives. With the market expanding and more makes and models on the horizon daily, owning a hybrid or EV is more beneficial than ever. Utah is the second-best state in the entire country to own one of these vehicles. From rebates and incentives from our dealership to statewide and federal incentives, our Bountiful Mazda team will discuss what benefits you get when you buy one of Mazda’s fuel-saving models.

Is It Worth It To Buy Electric in Utah?

Utah has quickly risen to be one of the top two states in the country to own an electric vehicle. This is calculated using infrastructure metrics such as the number of new charging stations per population of 100,000, electric vehicle registrations as a percentage of all registered vehicles, and the number of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) ports per station and registration percentages.

Also taken into consideration are the financial incentives metrics, which include:

  • The recharge cost.
  • The average cost of fuel.
  • The average amount of time people travel to work.
  • The average cost of an electric vehicle versus a gas-powered vehicle.
  • The number of incentives available per state.

There are also numerous incentives for owning an electric or hybrid vehicle available to those living in Utah.

Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Credit

The Internal Revenue Service offers credit for qualifying plug-in electric drive motor vehicles, including passenger vehicles and light trucks. The credit equals $2,500, plus an additional $417 for a vehicle with at least 5-kilowatt hours of capacity. For each additional kilowatt-hour battery capacity, $417 will be added to the initial $2,500 credit with a maximum credit of $7,500. This credit is only available for the first 200,000 vehicles sold per manufacturer in the United States. Vehicles sold after this period aren’t eligible for this credit.

Rocky Mountain Power Charging Station Rebates

If you’re located in Utah, Rocky Mountain Power offers a generous charging station rebate to help you recoup some of the cost of installing an electric vehicle charger in your home. Rebates are available to cover up to 75% of the charger’s costs, which means up to $200 for an AC Level 2 Charger. Only one rebate per vehicle is allowed. This rebate is provided to improve Utah’s air quality and encourage clean transportation methods.

Electricity and Propane Tax Exemptions

The electricity and propane used to charge and operate an electric motor vehicle are exempt from state fuel taxes for motor vehicles. You can visit the Utah State Tax Commission Fuel Taxes website to learn more about this exemption.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle Conversion Grants

A grant offered to government entities and businesses is in place to encourage the purchase of clean vehicles that operate on electric is available. The Utah Conversion to Alternative Fuel Grant Program may cover up to 100% of the cost of an electric vehicle for businesses, including light-duty vehicles.

Alternative Fuel Heavy-Duty Vehicle Tax Credit

The state of Utah offers the Alternative Fuel Heavy-Duty Vehicle Tax Credit on purchasing category seven or eight vehicles that are 100% electric. This credit is authorized through the year 2030 and offers credits of up to $13,500 for 2022 and later. At least 50% of the miles driven in the claimed vehicle must happen within the state. Up to 10 vehicle credits may be claimed.

Why Buy Electric?

There are several reasons to purchase an electric vehicle. These vary by person depending on their lifestyle but may include:

  • EVs charge at your home or on the road and costs less than paying for gasoline.
  • You can charge your vehicle at home while you sleep, so you aren’t wasting time going to the gas station.
  • You may get money back through incentives and credits through the state you reside in as well as through the IRS via a federal tax credit.
  • You save on maintenance costs since oil changes, spark plug replacements, and other common gas-powered engine repairs will be non-existent in an electric vehicle.
  • You can use off-peak rates while charging to save money on your electric bill.
  • You can drive in the carpool lane by yourself.
  • Power is instant with electric cars, which means rapid acceleration and responsive performance.

Most importantly, when you purchase an electric vehicle, you’re doing a lot to reduce the amount of pollution and greenhouse gases. There are zero tailpipe emissions from an electric vehicle.
