If you’re shopping for a compact crossover, you’ll find several appealing options on today’s market. Offering comfort and maneuverability combined with power and towing capabilities, this is the perfect do-it-all vehicle for many families. The new 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a compelling contender that stands up well to existing favorites like the 2024 Ford Escape. Explore how these options compare to one another and see which SUV is right for you.

Under the Hood

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a powerful addition to the crossover and SUV lineup, available with three different engine options. It comes standard with a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine that offers 280 horsepower. In the S trims, you’ll get this same engine with up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. For greater efficiency, you can opt for the CX-70 Mild Hybrid powertrain that includes an electric motor to supplement your gas motor. The hybrid setup offers 323 horsepower.

Overall, the CX-70 offers firm braking and responsive handling. Standard all-wheel drive responds promptly to changes in weather conditions to ensure you have power where and when you need it for a safe and comfortable ride.

The 2024 Ford Escape gives you more options for your driving experience. You can go with the gas-powered 180-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. While adequate, this engine doesn’t quite stand up to the peppy performance of the optional 250-horsepower turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine. The Escape is also available with a 2.5-liter I-4 hybrid engine delivering 192 horsepower or a plug-in hybrid 2.5-liter I-4 engine with 210 horsepower.

Efficiency

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 delivers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg. In gas-electric hybrid mode, the CX-70 PHEV offers the same fuel economy. The electric-only range of the CX-70 is 26 miles.

The Ford Escape offers slightly better mileage with a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg with AWD and 30 mpg with FWD. With the turbo four-cylinder engine, you can expect 26 mpg combined. In the conventional hybrid model, you’ll enjoy 39 mpg combined while the gas-electric hybrid Escape offers 40 mpg combined as well as an all-electric range of 37 miles.

Interior Comforts

Inside, the Mazda CX-70 is similar to the CX-90 without the third row of seating. The CX-70 seats five passengers and provides a total of 141.6 cubic feet of passenger volume. Behind the second row, you’ll enjoy 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Handy storage features include an under-floor storage compartment, bag hooks, and cubbies. Optional red leather upholstery makes the interior pop.

The 2024 Ford Escape offers 104 cubic feet of passenger volume and 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The Escape lacks the luxurious feel of the CX-70. The base-level Escape comes standard with cloth upholstery, though you can get faux leather seating in the Platinum.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 and 2024 Ford Escape have similar interior dimensions. While the Escape offers slightly more headroom and legroom, the CX-70 offers more spacious hip and shoulder dimensions.

Technology and Safety

In the Mazda CX-70, you’ll find a sizable 12.3-inch infotainment screen. You can get this paired with an available 12.3-inch digital gauge display and head-up display for impressive visibility of all your vehicle’s essential information. Not only do you get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, but you’ll also enjoy Alexa integration, which is a first for Mazda’s crossover vehicles. At the Premium trim and above, you can enjoy extras like a 12-speaker Bose stereo system.

Advanced driver-assist and safety technologies include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, vehicle exit warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. You can also enjoy optional features like the available 360-degree View Monitor, cruising and traffic support, smart brake support, road keep assist, blind spot assist, and head-on traffic avoid assist.

The Ford Escape comes with an 8-inch infotainment screen in the Active and ST trims. This increases to an impressive 13.2 inches in the Platinum and PHEV. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. The Escape will automatically download over-the-air updates to provide additional features as they’re rolled out. Optional technology enhancements include an available 12.3-inch digital gauge display, head-up display, and 10-speaker B&O Play audio system.

The 2024 Escape comes standard with Co-Pilot360, which includes forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. You can also opt for available features like speed sign recognition, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera.
