In a joint venture with Toyota, Mazda helped to create a brand-new manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama. This facility serves as an initial hub for the automaker and enables it to produce vehicles in the United States for the first time in just over a decade. Mazda’s side of the development started with the entirely new 2023 CX-50 model, and the next production is the 2023 edition of the CX-30. The all-new CX-70 and CX-90 are next in line. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2023 CX-30 and Mazda’s burgeoning U.S. production facility.

What’s New for the 2023 Mazda CX-30?

Apart from some light exterior and interior refreshes, Mazda has announced no significant changes for the 2023 Mazda CX-30. This is understandable due to its popular reception after replacing the CX-3. With its prominent grille, slender headlights, and high fenders, the CX-30 has been one of the more upscale subcompact SUVs in its class since it debuted in 2019.

Once again, the CX-30 comes in the following eight trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Overall, it’s a compelling choice for an extra-small SUV, serving its role perfectly with a comfortable cabin and fun driving experience. Viewed in profile, the CX-30’s sloping roofline makes the vehicle look larger than it really is. Look to the Preferred trim level or above for advanced exterior features, such as side-mirror integrated turn-signal lights.

Like before, the new CX-30 will have high-quality seating materials to match its upper-class interior. It comes with all-wheel drive as standard, offers a powerful turbocharged engine, and packs more standard advanced driver aids than many of its competitors. All in all, the CX-30 stands out more for being an affordable and capable SUV than a small one, offering similar quality and features to many midsize or larger alternatives.

Performance

Like its other key features, Mazda left the CX-30’s performance untouched between 2022 and 2023. The 2.0-liter engine produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque with the Turbo trim levels. It should have the same EPA fuel ratings of 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with standard powertrains. Like past models, it should achieve 0-60 mph times of about 8.1 seconds or 5.8 seconds with the Turbo trims.

The CX-30’s excellent handling is enhanced by the way it effortlessly navigates curves, making it at ease on winding roads. For a model of relatively small size, the CX-30 has good ground clearance, which adds to the sense of stability. The transmission is eager to upshift, and the default settings deliver both a fun drive and maximum fuel efficiency.

Interior

The new 2023 Mazda CX-30 is one of the few small SUVs that is suitable for families while also providing a luxury feel in the cabin. Check out the Premium or Premium Plus trims if you want maximum comfort, with features that include leather upholstery, a power liftgate, and heated front seats. It also boasts a more-than-competitive cargo area of 20.2 cubic feet, which isn’t bad for a five-seat compact vehicle.

Regarding technology and entertainment, an 8.8-inch touch screen with a rotary knob, eight-speaker audio system, HD radio, dual USB ports, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay return as standard features on all models. Satellite radio, a Bose 12-speaker stereo, navigation, a 7-inch digital driver display, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and a sunroof are some of the available options.

Safety

The CX-30 dissolves the stereotype of the safest SUVs being the biggest and heaviest. While made of durable materials and designed to protect you in an impact, this SUV also offers the latest in collision prevention and driver assistance. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system are just a few of the numerous safety features that come standard. An optional package adds adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a forward-collision warning system.

What the Return to U.S. Manufacturing Means

The new home of Mazda manufacturing in the United States has the following two assembly lines: Discovery and Apollo, in honor of Huntsville’s contribution to the Space Race. This factory will be responsible for producing a string of all-new or highly updated Mazda and Toyota vehicles, starting on Mazda’s side with the CX-50 and then the CX-30. The big takeaways from Mazda’s return to U.S. manufacturing are as follows:

  • Production will be limited and in high demand, so expect limited availability at times. We highly recommend inquiring with us early to find a new 2023 CX-30 or other vehicle with your preferred options, color, and features while it’s available.
  • Further manufacturing plants may be established in the coming years that make these and other recent Mazda vehicles available in greater numbers, helping to end the automobile shortages that have affected the market during the past few years.
  • If Mazda continues to produce vehicles in the United States, it’s only natural that their savings on delivery and shipping can be passed on to the customer. As a result, it’s likely that new Mazda vehicles will cost less than expected in the future.

The Discovery production line intends to serve as an initial testing hub for Mazda vehicles being produced in the United States, starting with the CX-30 and CX-50 and expanding to the two-row CX-70 and three-row CX-90. The new plant employs over 4,000 people and is receiving a total of $2.3 billion in capital investment from both Mazda and Toyota.
