Mazda’s vision is to minimize road accidents and protect drivers, passengers, and others on the road to the highest possible standard. When drivers feel safe behind the wheel, it frees them to drive with confidence so they can focus on their performance, such as making every ride a comfortable experience. To deliver on this vision, Mazda emphasizes proactive safety. This means Mazda vehicles come equipped with features that not only protect you and your passengers in case of a collision but help you avoid accidents entirely.

These features come at three levels: basic, preventative, and collision safety. Learning about what features contribute to each of these areas can help you feel confident that you’re making the right decision in choosing a Mazda.

Basic Safety Features

Getting the basics right is fundamental to driver safety. This is why every Mazda is designed for performance excellence and comfort. Your Mazda comes with exceptional visibility, perfect driver positioning, and dynamic performance, so you feel confident and in control whenever you’re behind the wheel. To protect your everyday safety, Mazda designed their vehicles to respond intuitively to your driving style. The cabin positions drivers in a way that maximizes your visibility, meaning you always have a full view of the road so you can react quickly to the unexpected.

Your comfort is also an important factor in keeping you safe. The engineers at Mazda designed the vehicle cabin to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. When you’re relaxed, it can improve your focus and ability to react. Plus, Mazda vehicles feature g-vectoring control, which subtly manages your car’s engine torque and weight transfer to ensure your tires perform optimally. This equates to a smooth ride, minimizing the need for corrections from the driver, so you always feel fully in control of your vehicle.

Preventative Safety Features

Mazda vehicles come with a range of preventative safety features to issue alerts and keep you out of harm’s way. Preventative features are those that improve your perception of what’s around you and help you avoid danger. For example, Mazda models can come with hazard detection technologies like:

  • Rear vehicle monitoring.
  • Lane departure warning system.
  • Emergency signal system.
  • Forward obstruction warning.

You also get features like brake assist and brake force distribution, which improve the stability of braking and stopping. There’s a four-wheel anti-lock braking system to distribute braking force evenly between all four wheels, producing a controlled stop. If you find yourself in a sideways skid, the dynamic stability control and traction control systems activate to help you correct your vehicle and regain control.

Collision Safety Features

In case of a collision, your Mazda comes built with several passive safety features to keep you and your passengers safe. This includes Mazda’s trademarked SKYACTIV-BODY, which uses materials like high-tensile steel to reinforce certain areas of the car’s body to absorb the impact of a collision. To further protect you and your passengers, these vehicles come with multiple Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) air bags. This air-bag system paired with an impact-absorbing soft interior can keep you and your passengers safe anywhere in the vehicle in case of a collision.

Mazda’s Health Alert Feature

Mazda plans to incorporate a new health alert feature into its lineup of safety tools. This feature can identify when a driver is experiencing or about to experience a significant health issue that may incapacitate them or make it unsafe for them to drive. Currently called the Co-Pilot Concept, this feature uses cameras to monitor drivers and ensure they are conscious and alert. Upon identifying a driver experiencing a major health event, like a stroke or heart attack, the car brings itself to a stop at a safe place, such as on the shoulder of the road or a curb.

The vehicle is also intelligent enough to signal distress and alert others that the driver may need assistance. For example, the car may automatically honk and flash its blinkers and emergency lights, though the developers working on the system have yet to decide the specifics of what the car will do. The car should also instantly call for emergency services, like calling for an ambulance or notifying police officers that there’s a dangerous situation. This ensures that emergency responders dispatch to the driver’s location to provide immediate medical attention.

While the automakers at Mazda are already looking to implement the technology within the next year in Japan, it might be a while before it debuts in the United States. Even so, the system is promising as a way of protecting drivers on the road, especially older drivers or those with preexisting health conditions. The developers at Mazda have worked closely with medical experts to engineer the feature so it can identify subtle changes in the driver’s alertness that may signal a health problem. The car alerts the driver and allows them time to respond before it intervenes.

Additionally, the developers have taken driver privacy into consideration. No personal data about the driver or their health will leave the car, ensuring that drivers feel secure in their privacy even with the technology in place.
