2024 Mazda CX-90
The Mazda CX-90 has an upscale look with a distinguished front fascia, a sleek and sensual profile, and a refined rear end that give it a dominant road presence. The CX-90’s wide design enables plenty of interior space for passengers and cargo, while wide-opening rear doors allow easy access to the rear seats or cargo area.

When equipped with the inline-six engine and the available Mi-Drive towing mode and Mazda tow hitch, the CX-90 has a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. Towing mode helps with the SUV’s stability and handling when you’re hauling the additional weight of a trailer. The CX-90 also comes standard with trailer stability assist that works with the dynamic stability control and traction control systems to make for safer towing.
The precise towing capacity of your CX-90 can vary according to the exact specifications of your vehicle and the weight of the passengers and cargo on board. As a guide, the CX-90 has these weight limits:
- Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the vehicle’s total weight, passengers, and cargo. The CX-90 has a GVWR of 6,418 or 6,854 pounds.
- Gross combination weight rating (GCWR) refers to the total weight of the vehicle, trailer, passengers, and cargo. For the CX-90, the GCWR rating ranges from 8,615 to 10,304 pounds.
- Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight allowed on each axle. The CX-90 has a front GAWR of 2,784 or 2,806 pounds, depending on the size of the wheels, and 3,735 or 3,640 pounds for the rear.
Always check your owners manual or the driver’s door pillar label for your CX-90’s weight limits.
It’s also important that the trailer and towing vehicle maintain a level ride by ensuring the tongue load and trailer cargo distribution are within recommended limits. Tongue load is the weight that the trailer puts on the tow hitch. This shouldn’t exceed 10% to 15% of the total trailer weight. You should distribute the trailer load around 60% in the front and 40% toward the rear.
CX-90 Interior Capacity

When you’ve got more gear than passengers, fold down the second and third rows for a generous 74.2-cubic-foot cargo area. Opting for the two-seat third row slightly increases cargo volumes to 15.9, 40.1, and 75.2 cubic feet. The standard power liftgate and available hands-free liftgate make it easy to access your gear.
CX-90 Power and Towing Performance
The choice of three powerful new engine options enables the CX-90’s impressive towing and cargo capacity. The base powertrain is a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid boost system. It generates 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. In CX-90 Turbo S models, the same engine delivers 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when you fill up with premium gasoline.
For the first time in the U.S., you can choose a Mazda with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The CX-90 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine paired with a 68 kW electric motor to produce 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. You’ll find each engine mated to a slick eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
Every CX-90 comes standard with an all-wheel-drive system. Though it’s biased toward the rear axle, it delivers power to the wheels that most need it. This helps provide a balanced and confident drive in all conditions, especially when towing. With Mi-Drive, you’ll be able to select the best driving mode for the conditions.
