Are you on the hunt for an SUV that offers convenience, innovative safety technology, versatile interior space, comfort, impressive performance, and lots of style? At the heart of the Mazda lineup is two solid performers: the Mazda CX-50 and the Mazda CX-5.
While each ride offers many impressive strengths and similarities, there are also some differences between the two automobiles. Keep reading as we take a closer look at the Mazda CX-50 and Mazda CX-5 to determine which SUV best suits your driving needs.
What Is the Mazda CX-Series?
From the all-new, rugged Mazda CX-50 and the versatile Mazda CX-30 to the all-rounded Mazda CX-5 and the roomy three-row CX-9, the Mazda CX-Series is specially designed for adventure. Each is equipped with an array of advanced technologies like G-Vectoring Plus. Even better, all models in this series feature Mazda's attention-grabbing Kodo design language, which gives the CX-Series that feel and look that is unmistakably Mazda.

Mazda CX-50 vs Mazda CX-5: Interior
If you're ready to discover the wild, then the Mazda CX-50 is your best bet. It's similar to the Mazda CX-5, only it's built for off-roading. It has an increased ground clearance with available rugged accessories and comfortably seats five passengers. The CX-50 is longer than the CX-5 and offers more room for cargo and rear-seat passengers.
The rear legroom of the CX-50 is about the same as the 39.6 inches of the CX-5 but slightly wider for more shoulder and hip room. The liftgate opening and cargo floor are optimized to support outdoor activities and allow easier loading of long outdoor gear. The roof rails have been designed to haul outdoor gear such as rooftop tents, storage units, and kayaks.
Mazda CX-50 vs Mazda CX-5: Styling

The CX-50 demonstrates a mix of ruggedness and premium touches that isn't available in other Mazda options yet. The CX-50's exterior styling features a rugged angle with black plastic cladding around the wheel wells to protect the wheel arches and lower body. The front and rear bumpers are designed to look like skid plates are included.
The CX-50 is also available in a modern tan exterior color dubbed zircon sand and features accessories including optional all-terrain tires, hood graphics, and a roof rack. Besides these extras, you'll love the fine-looking, squared-off shape and the modern-looking taillights and headlight. Without a doubt, the CX-50 looks sleeker than the already stylish CX-5.
In other words, the CX-50 gives off a more outdoorsy appearance than the CX-5, with broader shoulders, sharper lines, and plastic cladding that show off its wider stance. Signature Mazda details are abundant, including the rounded taillights and headlights you'd expect to find on other CX models.
Mazda CX-50 vs Mazda CX-5: Performance
All CX-50 models come with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, but you'll want to go for the more powerful turbocharged variant delivering 250 horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard, as is a six-speed automatic transmission. A standard hybrid and electrified drivetrains for the Mazda CX-50 are expected later.
The Mazda CX-5's standard engine delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged generates at least 227 horsepower. The CX-5 has a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Mazda CX-50 can tow more than the CX-5.

For off-roading, the CX-50 has a heavier-duty all-wheel-drive pairing with a larger clutch and a new off-road driving mode. Overall, the CX-50 is easily more capable than the CX-5 off-road.
Mazda CX-50 vs Mazda CX-5: Pricing
Mazda hasn't yet disclosed pricing for the CX-50, but we presume it'll go for slightly more than the CX-5. Mazda will start production of the CX-50 in January 2022 and go on sale in early 2022 as a 2023 model.
