One of the most popular trails in Davis County, the trail in Adams Canyon concludes at a spectacular waterfall. This is a mostly beginner-level hike but includes a few steep sections and has a total elevation gain of 1212 feet. The round trip length is a mere 3.8 miles long and takes about three hours to complete. It is appropriate for most people in fairly good health and rates high in safety for children of all ages. Along the trail, which crosses the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, you'll see a spectacular display of wildlife, native plants, and a spectacular 40-foot waterfall. For a little extra adventure, journey down to the Lower Waterfalls. You'll be glad you did.
Mueller Park Trail
Mueller Park Trail, also known as Elephant Rock, is a majestic and colorful trail to trek in the fall. You walk through alamedas of pines and oaks on this 6.8-mile hike. With an elevation between 5500 and 6000, this winding and scenic trail is popular among mountain bikers, families, and dog walkers. It is an easy path to follow that offers comfort and security knowing you will likely encounter others, in case you need some help, while still being able to enjoy nature and the open air. With several rest areas, benches, and picnic spots you can make a day of it and grill after your hike to watch the sunset away from the worries of the world.
Farmington Creek Trail
Farmington Creek Trail has an impressive 20-foot waterfall and is a go-to destination for locals and visitors alike. You're likely to find an old Ford Model T, or Tin Lizzie, rather than vegetation on this trail as the path is lined with abandoned cars. It is a short 3-mile hike with an elevation gain of a little over 900 feet. This is a family and animal-friendly hike, but you may encounter snakes on the trail. Be sure to wear solid boots and keep a close eye on children and pets to avoid possible run-ins with a snake.
Wild Rose Trail
Wild Rose Trail is a short 2-mile hike that rewards nature lovers with a spread of wildflowers and a nice view overlooking the valley at the end. If you have young children, you'll be happy to know that the trail begins inside Wild Rose Trailhead Park, located in North Salt Lake. Amenities include a small playground, an amphitheater, paved parking, and pavilions throughout. It is an easy hike for kids because the trail is so inviting and short and the elevation only gradually increases, but be careful during the summer months. There are no sources for shade, so things can get quite toasty in the Utah sun.
Parish Creek
If you are looking to pair a bit of learning with exercise for your family, consider taking an enjoyable and easy hike through Parish Creek in Centerville. A rare, hidden treasure are the authentic Native American pictographs you can find along the path of the creek. Although some have faded over time, many remain visible as a wondrous reminder of the past. Hiking Parish Creek typically takes less than an hour as you don't need to go far to see the pictographs, but it is a great spot to see the sunrise or sunset and observe nature at its finest as well.
Frary Peak
Frary Peak is a 6.5-mile round-trip hike that leads to an elevation of 6596 feet at the top of the peak. At this height, the air is much thinner and may cause some shortness of breath. If you do get to the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Great Salt Lake and the surrounding landscape. The hike is steep and can be slippery, so be sure to wear adequate hiking boots. As there is sparse shade and the warmer months bring out the bugs on Antelope Island, where the peak is, many choose to hike this trail in cooler weather. Even if you don't go far, you will likely see antelope, bison, and wild birds, as well as porcupines, coyotes, and badgers.
