Farmers markets are a great way to support local agriculture and small businesses, get involved in your community, and focus on eating sustainably grown and predominantly organic foods.
If you're interested in visiting a farmers market in Salt Lake City, you're in luck. Our dedicated team at Bountiful Mazda has compiled a list of the top five farmers markets in and around the Salt Lake City area, so you never have to second guess your weekend plans again.
Downtown Farmers Market
The first spot on our list of the top farmers markets in Salt Lake City goes to the Downtown Farmers Market run by Urban Food Connections of Utah. This farmers market has long been an institution in the Salt Lake area, with over 31 years of bringing the community together with three different markets that alternate throughout the year. They offer a wide selection of fresh produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, condiments, sauces, and handmade items for unbeatable prices.
Their most popular event is the Saturday Market, which is typically open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. between June and October each year. They also have their Liberty Market, which is open on Saturdays throughout the same months from 4 p.m. to dusk. From September to April, you can still enjoy all of your farmers market favorites with the annual Winter Market every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also arrange for ADA accessible accommodations for all three markets throughout the year.
Sugar House Farmers Market
The next spot on our list goes to the Sugar House Farmers Market. Since 2010, this market has become a summer staple in the Salt Lake region, with dozens of local farmers, vendors, and visitors coming each weekend to enjoy the best of what the market offers. Sugar House Farmers Market is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide everyone in the Salt Lake City area with access to healthy, fresh, and delicious food, as well as unique handmade items created by the many small businesses that participate each week.
The most recent Sugar House Farmers Market took place every Sunday throughout the month of August. While they haven't released exact dates for this upcoming summer, we're confident that the market will follow a similar pattern to previous years and take place on Sunday mornings during one of the summer months. Besides the wide selection of fresh produce and unique products, you can also enjoy musical performances from local acts while you dine and shop.
Daybreak Farmers Market
Our next farmers market in the Salt Lake City region is Daybreak Farmers Market, located just a short drive from SLC, in South Jordan. The Daybreak Farmers Market is a pinnacle of the Daybreak community and hosts a variety of local vendors, farmers, and volunteers throughout the summer months. The event follows a strict "No Trace Left Behind" rule for vendors and guests, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the natural beauty and resources in Utah.
Vendors at the Daybreak Farmers Market are all local to the region, with the assortment including farmers, ranchers, and artisans. If you're looking for unique gifts or want to decorate your place with work from a local artist, the market hosts a variety of craftspeople who create beautiful custom pieces of clothing, decor, jewelry, pottery, and even leather goods. The Daybreak Farmers Market will be open this summer every Saturday from June 4 to Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
9th West Farmers Market
Another great farmers market in the Salt Lake City area is the 9th West Farmers Market. This market is right by the International Peace Gardens on the west side of the city and started with the goal of bringing the community together. Luckily, the market's organizers have been able to achieve exactly that, with a wide weekly selection of locally sourced produce, meat, cheese, bread, honey, and more. Enjoy breakfast or lunch at the market thanks to the custom creations of the market's different chefs.
Besides food offerings, this market also has a selection of youth vendors selling homemade products, making it easy to support young and creative members of the Salt Lake Community. The 9th West Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from mid-June to mid-October, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Want to spend a Sunday morning outdoors but don't want to leave your furry friend behind? Not to worry, as 9th West Farmers Market is pet-friendly and welcomes guests to bring their leashed pets.
Wheeler Sunday Market
The last, but certainly not least, farmers market on our list is the Wheeler Sunday Market at the Wheeler Historic Farm. Started in 2011, the Wasatch Front Farmer's Market began operating the Sunday Farmer's Market at Wheeler Farm. The event became such a community favorite that the Salt Lake County Parks began hosting it as the Wheeler Sunday Market in 2018. Here, you can find farmers market staples, including fresh produce, baked goods, and artisanal creations from local artists including pottery, jewelry, and plenty of other handcrafted items.
Wheeler Sunday Market accepts SNAP, making this an accessible event for people of varying financial means. While there isn't an ATM on-site, many of the market's vendors accept debit or credit as legitimate payment. Admission to the Wheeler Sunday Market is completely free for the public, just like most farmers markets. For the upcoming 2022 summer season, the Wheeler Sunday Market will be open every Sunday from May 22 to Oct.16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
